Blu-ray Editorial Review
### Editorial Review Oculus, directed by Mike Flanagan, has made quite the impression on viewers with its innovative storytelling and memorable performances. Initially perceived as a conventional haunted house film, the narrative quickly transcends standard horror tropes. The plot centers on siblings Kaylie and Tim Russell, who return to their childhood home to confront a malevolent mirror, the Lasser Glass, believed to have played a role in their parents' deaths. The film successfully interweaves present-day events with flashbacks, creating a disorienting yet captivating experience that mirrors the protagonists' tumultuous emotional journey. Flanagan's delicate handling of time and space invites the audience to question reality alongside the characters, enriching the viewing experience. While some viewers have found this nonlinear narrative challenging, many appreciate the depth it adds to the horror. Performances are notably strong, particularly from the younger actors Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan, who deliver impressive portrayals of Kaylie and Tim in their childhood. Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites also shine in their adult roles, contributing to an overall engaging cast. The film employs practical effects effectively, steering clear of excessive CGI, which many fans of the genre commend. It drives home a poignant narrative that, while disturbing, concludes logically and satisfyingly, reminiscent of classic horror storytelling. Despite some minor critiques regarding specifics of the plot's setup, Oculus has garnered a strong following, with many declaring it one of the finest horror films in recent years. The film's ability to evoke fear and reflect the psychological struggles of its characters makes it a standout effort in the genre. ####
